School Screenings

Health Screening

In Minnesota, no laws require periodic screening of students in the schools. At Laporte it has determined that the health screenings offered to students will be: heights/weights, vision and hearing. These screenings will follow the guidelines recommended by the Minnesota Department of Health. The primary goal is to identify any difficulties that might impact a child’s ability to learn with early detection and intervention.
The purpose of periodic health screenings are to:

  • Identify children who are not growing and developing normally
  • Refer students with visual or hearing abnormalities that might interfere with their education or growth to health care professional.
  • Encourage parents to take responsibility for their child’s growth, development, and follow up with referrals to health care professionals

The Laporte Screening Program is as follows:

  • Students in grades 1,3,6,7, and 10 will have vision and hearing screened. All students will be measured for heights, and weights in the fall.
  • All new transfer students k-10th grade and all students on the watch list will be screened as needed.

Assistance is available to low income families for vision and hearing issues. Contact the Health Office for more information.

SCOLIOSIS SCREENING
Scoliosis is a very rare condition that causes abnormal curvature of the spine. The standards and methods of screening for scoliosis are in transition. Children are observed longer and fewer are being placed in a brace or sent for surgery. The Gillette Children’s Hospital is in process of revising their recommendations. Due to these changes, we will delay screening until we are updated with the revised standards and recommendations. Parents should observe their children when they are in their swim suits to see if the back looks straight and if the pelvis looks level from the back. When the child bends over in front of you, do the shoulder blades look even? If you observe any abnormalities, contact your primary care provider for an assessment and recommendations.

Healthy Sleeping Habits

Healthy Sleeping Habits Mayo Clinic recommends that students get 9-11 hours of sleep each night. When students get enough sleep they are in a better mood, they have less stomach aches, and over all just feel better throughout the day. Try to make it a routine so each night they go to bed at the
